History and Significance:

Before the temple got its own space, William Hornby, a governer of Bombay at the time built a Vellard (fence) in 1784 to form one island. After the project was completed, year later in 1785, the sea wall of hornby vellard collapsed twice. William Hornby wanted to connect a link between Malabar Hills and Worli but was unsuccessful, so one day, an on-site chief engineer, Ramji Shivji Prabhu dreamt of a devi statue in the sea near Worli.

It is said that he dreamt of Goddess Mahalaxmi who asked him to find three idols located at the bottom of the ocean and place them inside a temple dedicated to her at the top of hillock.

After the recovery of these three statues by the team, a small temple was built for the found idols. After this, the on-going work of Vellard i.e. the link between Malabar Hill and Worli got completed without causing any hindrance.

Travel Trivia:

Hornby Vellard was a project to build a causeway uniting all seven islands of Bombay into a single island with a deep natural harbour.
