Without Passport you dare Travel international (Wink wink).

So in today's blog a simple general knowledge on what is Passport? What does it do? Is it possible to travel any other country without Passport?

What Is Passport?

A passport is a travel booklet/document, generally issued by a country's government to its citizens, that certifies the identity and nationality of its holder primarily for the purpose of international travel.

What Information Does Passport Hold?

Standard passports holds the information such as the holder's name, place and date of birth,  place and date of issue, photograph, signature, passport number and other relevant identifying information (Parents/Guardian name and residential address).

Who Issues Passport?

For Indian citizens, passport is issued by Ministry of External Affairs with help of Passport seva Kendra that are located across India to avoid any form of duplication or forgery. 

Passport Seva Kendra looks after biometrics, passport issuance, online linking with police stations, centralised printing of passports and dispatch of passports.


Types Of Passport?

Every passport has a "type" written at the top of the booklet page where holders name is displayed.

There are three types of passports issued as follow:
  • Personal Passport (Type-P) is issued to citizens of India for travel or holidaying purposes, to students who wants to study abroad and for people who have business in other countries.
  • Service Passport (Type-S) is issued to Indian citizen or any individual who is representing the Indian government on official business.
  •  Diplomatic Passport (Type-D) is issued to Indian diplomats who have certain high ranking government officials (state as well) couriers also to members of the union council of Ministers or member of Parliament who are traveling abroad for offical business.
What Language Is Passport Printed In?

Indian Passport is printed in two official languages of India which are both Hindi and English.

Do We All Need Passport When Traveling Abroad?

Yes. It is mandate for every Indian citizen to have a valid passport who wants to travel abroad/international. 

Age Criteria To Have Passport?

No. There is no age criteria or age limit to apply for Passport online or offline.

Even if the baby is few months old and requires international travel must have Passport.

Do We Need Passport For Domestic Travel?

If planning a domestic trip i.e. a trip from Mumbai to Delhi, you do not need a passport but you can use it as a identity document or any national photo identity document to travel within home country.

Travel Trivia:

Passports are not needed by citizens of India and Nepal to travel to each other's country, but some identification is required for border crossings.

Where Can I Apply For Passport?

Ministry of External Affairs have launched around 36 Passport Offices in India which now has around 93 Passport Seva Kendras (PSKs), 424 Post Office Passport Seva Kendras (POPSKs).

You can apply for Passport both in offline as well as online mode.

For Offline:
Applicant has to visit nearest PSK/POPSK and fill the application, make the appointment and payment accordingly which might be inconvenient at times due to long queues.

For Online: 
Applicant has to fill and submit application form, do the payment and then book an appointment online. Later on applicant has to be at the respective PSK/POPSK on the selected date and time. This avoids long queues and gives hassle free experience.

What Is The Cost Involved In Applying Passport?

1. If you are applying for a new Fresh Passport:

• Applicant's Age: Less than 15 years
Type: Normal
Cost: ₹1000
Type: Tatkal
Cost: ₹3000

• Applicant's Age: Between 15-18 years
Required Validity: 5 Years/Till The Age Of 18 Years
Type: Normal
Cost: ₹1000
Type: Tatkal
Cost: ₹3000
OR
• Applicant's Age: Between 15-18 years
Required Validity: 10 Years
> Option 1:
No. Of pages in Booklet: 36 pages
Type: Normal
Cost: ₹1500
Type: Tatkal
Cost: ₹3500
> Option 2:
No. Of pages in Booklet: 60 pages
Type: Normal
Cost: ₹2000
Type: Tatkal
Cost: ₹4000

• Applicant's Age: 18 years and above
> Option 1:
No. Of pages in Booklet: 36 pages
Type: Normal
Cost: ₹1500
Type: Tatkal
Cost: ₹3500

> Option 2:
No. Of pages in Booklet: 60 pages
Type: Normal
Cost: ₹2000
Type: Tatkal
Cost: ₹4000

2. If you are applying for Re-Issue of Passport, under the category of:

  a. Validity expired/Due To Expire
  b. Delete ECR/Change In Personal Particular
  c. Exhaustion of Pages
  d. Lost/Damaged 

Depending upon the age criteria and the demand type i.e. normal or tatkal type cost of re-issue passport will vary between the range of ₹1000-₹4000.

What Are The Documents Required To Get Passport?

The basic and valid documents required for Passport are as follows:

 a. Aadhar Card. (Address Proof)
 b. Pan card. (Photo Identity Proof)
 c. Birth Certificate.
 d. Electricity Bill
 e. 3-6 months bank statement of passbook.
 f. Education Certificate.

How Many Days It Takes For Passport To Get Issued?

As of 2018, passports can be issued within 20 days of applying with police verification step involved.

Do Passport Gets Expired?

Yes. Passport do get expired as they have the validity of 10 years from the date it was issued. Your passport comes with issue date and expiry date.

Beware Of Touts:

If you are getting a passport from third party (travel agent), read below:

A standard passport booklet format as per the official includes the cover, which contains the name of the issuing country, a national symbol, a description of the document e.g. Type P or Type D. There are blank pages for visas, and to stamp for entries and exit. Passports are assigned alphanumerically by issuing authority.
